Marketing plumbing-and-HVAC shops in Alberta

Alberta homes lean heavily on natural gas, and the heating season is long, so the HVAC side usually carries the winter. The opportunity for a combined shop is to keep plumbing visible through that peak and to own the gas-appliance work that sits between the two trades.

Alberta is a heating province first. Natural gas heats most homes, winters are cold and long, and southern Alberta's chinook winds can swing a frozen week into a mild one and back again. For a combined plumbing and HVAC shop, the marketing challenge is less about finding winter work than about keeping the plumbing side visible while every phone call seems to be about a furnace.

The Alberta market

Calgary and Edmonton dominate, with Airdrie, Strathcona County (Sherwood Park) and St. Albert growing alongside them. Red Deer and Lethbridge are the main regional centres, and Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray) runs on its own economy and schedule.

Gas furnaces, gas water heaters, gas boilers and gas lines for ranges and fireplaces all sit in the overlap between your two trades. That overlap is where a combined shop can beat a pure plumber or a pure furnace company: one visit, one licensed crew, one invoice. It deserves its own service-line pages.

Seasons and swings

  • October to April: heating peaks. Keep separate plumbing campaigns running for frozen and burst lines, water heater failures and sump issues during thaw cycles.
  • Chinook weeks in the south: a sudden warm spell can drop heating calls within a day and bring meltwater and drainage calls. Budgets should be able to move as fast as the weather.
  • May to June: a short shoulder. Push air conditioning and heat pump quotes before the heat arrives, plus maintenance plans covering both trades.
  • July to September: cooling on hot weeks, then autumn furnace checks offered to plumbing-only customers.

Regulators to know

We summarise and link only. Check your own obligations with each body.

  • Alberta's safety codes system, administered by Municipal Affairs, covers disciplines including plumbing, gas, boilers and pressure vessels, building and electrical. Accredited municipalities and agencies deliver permits and inspections, and ABSA administers pressure equipment.
  • Compulsory trades. The Tradesecrets list includes Plumber and Gasfitter Class A and B. Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training oversees certification. Job ads should state which certificates a role requires.
  • WCB-Alberta covers workers' compensation.

Programs, as of October 2026

  • Clean Energy Improvement Program. CEIP lets residential and commercial property owners finance energy-efficiency and renewable upgrades through their property tax, but only in participating municipalities; 26 were listed when we checked. For heat pump, high-efficiency equipment and envelope work, name the municipality before mentioning it.
  • Federal oil-to-heat-pump grants. Natural Resources Canada's OHPA page says 2026-07-31 was the last day for Alberta applicants. Take any older grant wording off your site.

With few province-wide rebates to lean on, Alberta marketing for combined shops relies more on reliability, response time and the convenience of one shop for both trades than on incentive messaging.

A quick Alberta sum

Picture a Calgary shop with five furnace technicians and three plumbers. In January the furnace side is booked solid while the plumbers sit at about 70%. If a frozen-line and water heater campaign fills even half the gap, roughly 12 extra plumbing hours a week, at $120 an hour in gross profit that's about $1,440 a week, or close to $19,000 over a 13-week winter. Swap in your own rates; the point is that the plumbing side has room exactly when the furnace side doesn't.

How we'd approach an Alberta combined shop

  1. Treat Calgary and Edmonton as separate markets, each with its own campaigns, pages and review requests, and add satellite communities only where you really send trucks.
  2. Build a weather trigger. Campaigns for no-heat and frozen-line calls are ready in September and switched on with the first deep cold.
  3. Own the gas-appliance overlap with pages for gas lines, water heaters and boilers that make clear one crew handles the whole job.
  4. Use the long winter to cross-sell. A furnace customer in January is a natural water heater age check in February. See cross-selling.
  5. Recruit on certification. Name the compulsory trades you employ and how apprentices progress.

Alberta plans carry 5% GST. See pricing, the areas overview, or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

What tax is added to plans for an Alberta shop?

5% GST, at CRA rates as of October 2026. There's no provincial sales tax in Alberta, so Elite at $3,999 a month comes to $4,198.95.

Are plumber and gasfitter compulsory trades in Alberta?

Alberta's Tradesecrets site lists Plumber and Gasfitter Class A and B among the compulsory certification trades, meaning restricted activities need a journeyperson certificate or registered apprenticeship. Confirm the details with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

Can we mention CEIP financing in our ads?

Only where it applies. The Clean Energy Improvement Program is offered through participating municipalities, 26 of them when we checked in October 2026. Name the municipality and link the program rather than presenting it as province-wide.
