Marketing plumbing-and-HVAC shops in Ontario

Ontario is the country's biggest and most crowded market for combined shops. Clear service-line pages, tight service areas and a provincial rebate program that covers heat pumps and heat pump water heaters do most of the heavy lifting.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Ontario has more combined plumbing and HVAC shops than any other province, and more single-trade competitors around each one. In the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Ottawa and the larger southern cities, a combined shop wins by being specific: specific about which municipalities it serves, specific about which jobs it wants, and clear that one crew can handle both the heating and the hot water.

The Ontario market

Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London, Markham and Vaughan are the largest markets, each with its own competitive mix. Southern Ontario is mostly gas-heated, with cold winters moderated near the Great Lakes. Northern Ontario has longer, colder heating seasons and fewer contractors per town.

Practical consequences:

  • In the GTA and Ottawa, paid search is expensive for generic terms. Service-line pages and Local Services Ads for specific jobs, in a tightly drawn area, beat broad campaigns.
  • In mid-sized cities such as London, Kitchener-Waterloo and Barrie, a combined shop with steady reviews from both trades can become the obvious local choice.
  • In the North, reachability and trust matter more than price: honest travel areas, after-hours instructions and reviews that mention response.

Seasons and balancing

  • November to March: heating carries the load in the south; plumbing campaigns continue for frozen lines in older housing and for water heater failures.
  • March to April: thaw and spring rain bring sump, backwater and drain work; plumbing gets the push.
  • May to July: air conditioning and heat pump quotes. Heat pump interest in Ontario is tied closely to the rebate program, so campaigns should be ready before peak cooling.
  • August to October: furnace and boiler check-ups to plumbing-only customers, and replacement campaigns before the first cold.

Regulators to know

We summarise and link only; confirm your obligations with each body.

  • TSSA, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority, says most fuels regulations require Ontario contractors to be registered with it. That covers the gas side of a combined shop: furnaces, boilers, gas water heaters and gas lines.
  • Skilled Trades Ontario handles trade certification and apprenticeship standards. Link it from your careers page.
  • WSIB covers workplace insurance.

Customers in Ontario can look up registered fuels contractors, so make sure the business name on your site and Google profile matches your registration.

Programs, as of October 2026

The Home Renovation Savings Program, delivered through Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas, is the main program combined shops get asked about. Its page listed:

  • Single upgrades with no assessment needed, including cold-climate air source heat pumps up to $7,500 and ground source heat pumps up to $12,000;
  • Bundled upgrades after a home energy assessment, including $500 for qualified heat pump water heaters.

That second item is useful to a combined shop: a heat pump water heater is a plumbing job, and a household doing a heat pump upgrade may already be thinking about the assessment. Date every mention and link the program page; amounts and rules change.

Choosing ground in the GTA

Pick municipalities by drive time from your shop and by the jobs you want. A shop in Vaughan might decide that Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham are home turf, with Toronto north of a certain line served on a case-by-case basis. That decision shapes your Google profile service area, your ad targeting and which area pages are worth writing.

How we'd approach an Ontario combined shop

  1. Draw a tight map. Choose the municipalities you can reach fast and build depth there before expanding.
  2. One page per profitable job, in both trades, with the crossover jobs (combi boilers, heat pump water heaters, hydronic heat) given special weight. See service-line pages.
  3. Rebate content that's honest and dated, linking the administrator rather than paraphrasing amounts that may change.
  4. Use your customer list. In a crowded market, the households that already know you are your cheapest growth. See cross-selling.

Ontario plans carry 13% HST. See pricing, all regions, or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

What tax applies to plans for an Ontario shop?

13% HST, at CRA rates as of October 2026. Growth at $1,999 a month comes to $2,258.87 with HST; on annual billing at $1,499 a month it is $1,693.87.

Is the GTA too competitive for a mid-sized combined shop?

Not if you choose your ground. Bidding for 'plumber Toronto' against everyone is expensive. Owning a few municipalities you serve quickly, with pages for your most profitable jobs in both trades, is usually affordable and effective.

Can we advertise Save on Energy rebates?

You can mention them accurately, with a date and a link. As of October 2026, the Home Renovation Savings Program listed rebates up to $7,500 for cold-climate air source heat pumps and $500 for qualified heat pump water heaters, among others. Confirm current terms and your own eligibility before quoting amounts.
