Marketing plumbing-and-HVAC shops in Prince Edward Island

PEI is small enough that reputation travels faster than any ad. A combined shop wins there by being visibly good at both trades, keeping its Google profile and reviews strong, and explaining conversions honestly.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Prince Edward Island is a market where most customers either know someone who has used your shop or can find someone who has. That makes it very different from Toronto or Calgary. A combined plumbing and HVAC shop on the Island grows mainly by doing visibly good work in both trades and making it easy for people to say so, with marketing that supports word of mouth rather than replacing it.

The PEI market

Charlottetown and Stratford form the main market, with Summerside as the second centre and Cornwall, Three Rivers and the rural communities making up the rest. Distances are short by Canadian standards, so a single shop can realistically cover a large share of the Island.

For a combined shop:

  • Most searches are local and specific, for example "heat pump Charlottetown" or "plumber Summerside". A page for each main job in both trades, plus honest service-area wording, covers most of what's needed.
  • Reviews carry more weight than in big cities, because customers often recognise the names.
  • Seasonal residents with cottages bring opening and closing work in spring and autumn, which suits a shop that can handle water lines, water heaters and heating together.

Homes and heating

Homes on the Island use a mix of oil, electric heat, wood and heat pumps, and heat pumps have become the main system in many of them. Winters are cold and snowy, moderated by the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In practice:

  • Heat pump servicing and replacement is a steady base for the HVAC side.
  • Oil-to-heat-pump conversions still come up, and each one tends to touch the plumbing side too, through water heaters or hydronic systems.
  • Older farmhouses and rural homes often have wells and older plumbing that make a full mechanical-room review useful.

Seasons and balancing

  • December to March: heating and heat pump service calls; plumbing campaigns for freeze-ups and failed water heaters.
  • April to June: cottage openings, spring water issues and conversion quotes for next winter.
  • Summer: heat pumps cool, and tourist-season businesses need quick plumbing help.
  • September to November: cottage closings, heat pump check-ups and water heater age checks for past customers.

Cottage season is a genuine two-trade opportunity. A spring and autumn service covering water, hot water and heating suits seasonal owners well. See seasonal balancing.

Regulators and certification

We tried to load the Government of PEI's inspection and technical safety pages for this page and could not reach them, so we don't summarise them here. Plumbing, propane and other technical work is licensed provincially; confirm what applies to your shop directly with the Government of PEI.

  • Workers Compensation Board of PEI covers workers' compensation.
  • Red Seal trades such as Plumber, Oil Heat System Technician and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic are worth naming in job ads where you employ them.

Programs

We don't list PEI rebate amounts on this page because we couldn't confirm current program status from official pages at the time of writing. If you mention a program on your own site, check efficiencyPEI first, write the date, and link the page.

A small-market example

On the Island, 50 new Google reviews in a year can move a shop from one of many to the obvious name. If your crews complete 1,500 jobs a year across both trades and one customer in twenty leaves a review when asked the same way after every job, that's 75 reviews. Ask every customer, never filter, and never offer rewards.

How we'd approach a PEI combined shop

  1. A strong Google profile listing both trades, with photos and steady reviews from plumbing and heating customers alike.
  2. Island-wide service pages with honest coverage, not one page per village.
  3. A cottage service offer for spring and autumn, marketed to past customers with consent. See cross-selling.
  4. Recruiting that sells year-round work in both trades to the small local pool of technicians.

PEI plans carry 15% HST. See pricing, all regions, or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

What tax applies to plans for a PEI shop?

15% HST, at CRA rates as of October 2026. Growth at $1,999 a month comes to $2,298.85 with HST.

Is paid advertising worth it on PEI?

In moderation. The market is small, so a tightly targeted search campaign for your most profitable jobs can work, but the bigger levers are your Google profile, reviews from both trades and staying in touch with past customers.

Which PEI energy programs should we mention?

Only ones you have just checked on the official efficiencyPEI pages. PEI programs have changed often, and we couldn't verify the current list for this page, so we don't name any. Date and link whatever you mention.
